Why you shouldn’t hate your routine

Maybe this sounds familiar to you: today my routine blew up and I miss it.

I woke up with a small headache and didn’t go to the gym.

First mistake. From there, everything went to the South.

I had breakfast sooner than usual and wasted a lot of time afterward.

I received a phone call to pick up my wife.

I would not say that was unexpected, but I didn’t know when it would come.

I had not prepared, so I had to hurry up and get prepared.

We had a coffee together. Not part of my routine, but nice.

Drive her to the train station, buy some groceries, and prepare lunch.

(I admit the lunch preparation was just putting something in the microwave)

In the afternoon, I was late for two appointments with friends and family.

This kind of thing does not usually happen to me.

Why did this happen?

Because I was not following my routine.

When I follow my routine, I trust my schedule to tell me what to do.

When I follow my routine, the notifications tell me what comes next.

When I follow my routine, I do not get so stressed.

Was today a nice day? Yes. It was productive and I enjoyed it.

Was it way more stressful than it needed? Yes.

I dislike stressful days full of surprises and improvisation.

Maybe that’s because I am into security management.

I like boring days.

Days when I know what will happen.

And I have procedures to follow in case there are surprises.

Are those procedures enough? No. One thing is being prepared and another one is having procedures.

You should be prepared. Procedures are nice to have.

Procedures make days boringly sweet.

If you like boring days in security management, send me an email. Maybe I can help you with that.
